Bacillus Cereus Selective Agar Base (MYP) ISO is formulated for selective isolation and quantitative enumeration of Bacillus cereus in food products, according to ISO standards. The medium uses mannitol, casein digest, beef extract and phenol red to differentiate Bacillus cereus colonies from other flora. After preparation (autoclaving, addition of egg-yolk suspension and polymyxin supplement), agar plates support presumptive detection of Bacillus cereus via characteristic colony morphology and lecithinase activity.
Bacillus Cereus Selective Agar Base (MYP) ISO (catalogue No. 1343) is a dehydrated agar medium intended for presumptive enumeration and isolation of Bacillus cereus from food samples. The base medium contains enzymatic digest of casein, beef extract, D-mannitol, sodium chloride, phenol red and agar, providing nutrients and differential conditions for Bacillus cereus. After sterilization, the medium must be supplemented with egg-yolk emulsion and polymyxin to complete selective and differential properties.
Under incubation at 30 °C, Bacillus cereus forms typical colonies: mannitol-negative (pink colonies due to phenol red), often surrounded by a zone of lecithinase-induced precipitation due to egg-yolk reaction. Non-fermenting flora is inhibited by polymyxin, allowing selective growth of Bacillus cereus. The medium conforms to standards ISO 7932, ISO 11133 and ISO 21871.
Advantages
- Selective and differential medium specifically for Bacillus cereus identification.
- Conforms to international ISO standards for enumeration (ISO 7932 / ISO 11133 / ISO 21871).
- Supports reliable presumptive detection via characteristic colony morphology and lecithinase activity.
- Suitable for quantitative plate-count techniques in food microbiology laboratories.
